about me

Syra Hassan is a Pakistani-Canadian self-taught artist who discovered a passion for artivism—her artwork centers on issues of language deprivation, inequity in education, and discrimination.

In 2019, I initiated the "Hear Me Sign" campaign to raise global awareness of the importance of early language acquisition for Deaf children. I began artivism as a means of healing the misadventures and tribulations of early childhood education.

I work primarily with color standard poster boards, paper, and photography to create intricate protest signs.

I currently reside in Toronto, Ontario.

I am also featured on TOAF as a Presenting Artist. To learn more about me and my artwork, visit my Instagram page @_thesyrafactor_ and Facebook page "The Syra Factor."

Bringing Awareness

The deaf community faces unnoticed challenges in a world dominated by sound. This summary highlights their struggles with communication barriers, limited access to information, and social isolation. Communication poses a significant obstacle as spoken language hinders their participation in conversations, leading to frustration and exclusion. Access to quality education is also a challenge, with a lack of qualified teachers, appropriate materials, and accessible technology resulting in academic setbacks and limited career opportunities. Deaf individuals often encounter limited accessibility in public spaces and services, such as the absence of subtitles, captioning, and sign language interpretation, hindering their engagement in various aspects of life.

These struggles contribute to social isolation due to the absence of inclusive environments and difficulties in spontaneous conversations, leading to feelings of loneliness and alienation. To address these challenges, it is essential to promote awareness and inclusivity. This includes advocating for accessible communication, improving educational resources, enhancing public services, and fostering social integration. Recognizing the value and contributions of deaf individuals is crucial, empowering them to overcome barriers and fully participate in all aspects of life.

Communication Challenges

One of the primary obstacles for the deaf community is communication. Most people rely on spoken language, making it difficult for deaf individuals to participate fully in conversations. While sign language provides a means of communication, not everyone understands it. This language barrier hinders interactions with hearing individuals, leading to feelings of frustration and exclusion.

Educational Barriers

The deaf community perpetually encounters significant challenges in accessing quality education with limited resources, including qualified teachers, appropriate learning materials, and accessible technology. As a result, they often fall behind their hearing peers academically and face difficulties pursuing higher education or career opportunities, which creates yet another layer of challenges that they need to overcome.

Social Isolation

The struggles faced by the deaf community often lead to social isolation. The absence of inclusive environments and the difficulty of engaging in spontaneous conversations contribute to feelings of loneliness and alienation. Without proper support networks and opportunities for social interaction, deaf individuals may experience mental health issues and reduced quality of life.
